Ofsted report cards, explained
Since 10 November 2025 Ofsted no longer gives a school one overall grade. Instead each inspection produces a report card with a grade for up to eight parts of school life on a five-point scale, plus a yes or no on whether pupils are kept safe. Ofsted says the new grades can't be lined up against the old outstanding-to-inadequate scale. This page shows how many schools have a report card so far, month by month and by area, how the grades are spread, and the most recently published cards. It updates every night.
The scale
| Grade | We show it as | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Exceptional | Exceptional | Practice that is a model for others; rare. |
| Strong standard | Strong | Consistently above what is expected. |
| Expected standard | As expected | Meets the standard every school should reach. Most schools sit here. |
| Needs attention | Needs attention | Below the standard in ways the school must address. |
| Urgent improvement | Urgent improvement | Serious weaknesses; usually accompanied by a category of concern. |
Areas
On school pages we use everyday names, with Ofsted's own wording underneath: Teaching (curriculum and teaching), Achievement, Behaviour and attendance, Support for every child (inclusion: how well pupils with SEND, from low-income families or known to social care are supported), Wellbeing (personal development and wellbeing), Leadership (leadership and governance), and where they apply Early years and Sixth form (post-16). Safeguarding is simply met or not met.
How far Ofsted has got
Month by month
Report cards by the month the inspection began. Ofsted paused over the summer holidays, so July and August are quiet.
By phase
| Phase | Report cards | Share of schools | Achievement strong or better | Achievement needs attention or worse |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Primary | 1,757 | 10% | 14% | 29% |
| Secondary | 531 | 17% | 20% | 30% |
| Special | 114 | 5% | 25% | 14% |

| Alternative provision | 28 | 8% | 29% | 7% |
| Middle | 13 | 14% | 8% | 38% |
By region
Achievement is the area parents ask about most, so it is the one compared here. Regions inspected in a different order or with a different mix of phases will differ for reasons that have nothing to do with quality.
| Region | Report cards | Share of schools | Achievement strong or better | Achievement needs attention or worse |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| North West | 447 | 13% | 9% | 39% |
| South East | 382 | 10% | 17% | 23% |
| West Midlands | 316 | 12% | 15% | 23% |
| South West | 288 | 12% | 11% | 33% |
| East of England | 267 | 10% | 11% | 25% |
| London | 234 | 9% | 47% | 8% |
| East Midlands | 222 | 10% | 11% | 36% |
| Yorkshire and the Humber | 220 | 9% | 20% | 32% |

How we use report cards in the score
Each area is turned into points (exceptional 100, strong 82, expected 62, needs attention 30, urgent 5) and combined, with leadership and achievement counting most and support for every child and teaching next. If safeguarding is not met, the inspection score is capped at 30. Schools not yet inspected under the new system keep their old grade, which counts for less in the score as it gets older.
